When Hearing Abilities Falter

By: Joel Davila

What you will be dealing with when it comes to a hearing test is a very simple process and this is something that should be considered if you are having doubts with your hearing. If you are experiencing problems when it comes to your hearing, do not hesitate to consult with an audiologist as he or she will help you find out what is wrong after administering several sound tests. In this case, an audiometer is what the audiologist will use to determine your ears? sensitivity to sound.

There are three available hearing tests for you to choose from and two more exams are available aside from this one which makes use of an audiometer to check how sensitive your ears are to sounds in various frequencies. One possible alternative would be the Weber test. In this case, you can also use the Rinne test.

Considering an examination for hearing, the first thing to understand is the audiometer. This involves a series of sound tests done in a soundproof booth. Considering this kind of evaluation, it starts off with the audiologist instructing the person being evaluated to wear a set of headphones that is connected to the main audiometer mechanism and then a series of sound tests on different frequencies will be done and the person should tell the examiner of he or she no longer hears anything and the person being examined may also be asked to repeat what he or she can hear.

A basic hearing test is what you have here. In this case, named after Ernst Heinrich Weber is the Weber test for hearing and it makes use of a vibrating tuning fork which is placed in varying facial areas. In this case, areas like the chin or the middle of the forehead touch the fork as long as they are equidistant to the ears.

This kind of test works by checking if the person being evaluated can hear the sound coming from the vibration of the tuning fork in both ears. In this case, both ears do not have to hear the same volume of sound. What you will be able to detect with this test are unilateral hearing conditions.

An otologist from Germany by the name of Heinrich Adolf Rinne was the namesake for the Rinne test. In this case, you have a more scientific test as compared to the Weber test, one that compares a person's perception of sounds. Here, sounds are transmitted either through the air or by bone conduction through the mastoid.

Both the Weber and Rinne tests utilize a vibrating tuning fork which is able to make a higher frequency sound. Here, the tuning fork is placed by the examiner on the mastoid process until any sound can no longer be heard. What the examiner does next is place the tuning fork outside the ear.

You cannot have a hearing impairment and still be able to distinguish some sounds. The people who have hearing impairments cannot hear anything. Problems with hearing are detected by the Rinne test in this manner.

Some people who get hearing tests also have their speech evaluated. Aside from running sound tests in different frequencies, the audiologist will ask the person being evaluated to repeat the sounds that he or she hears. A good sense of hearing is usually associated with being able to distinguish words.

The results of a hearing test will tell you if you need to consult with a professional or not. If treated, hearing problems can be resolved. Some people experience permanent hearing loss.
