The value of good gear

By: Espernz Sonce

Back in high school I was able to carry out an entire backpacking trip that will always be embedded in my memories. The nice memory to two brothers walking on the mountains, fishing together and admiring the beauty of nature is what comes up most of the time. But somewhere deep in the niches of my conscience lay a few rather unpleasant recollections that taught me valuable lessons about this unique sport. Even though we know better now, it could still have greatly benefitted us if we had just an idea of what we were getting into.

I have taken many two day trips for over the last dozen of years or so. By contrast, my brother who has become a backpacking specialist now takes part in many excursions that last for four to five days. A lot of people may contemplate how he could live longer at the outdoors. The gear that he selects and takes with him and knowing the important rules by heart is why he is able to have fun.

Like most sports out there, this also has a set of rules that people should know about. One is to invest in comfortable clothing and backpacks that fit body specifications. What you need to also have is a tent and sleeping back that is wellmade and never forget to pack the needed stuff only. Various occasion I was able to witness those that did not have the right type of bag with them and also those who over packed.

From the feet and then all the way up is how you should equip yourself declared my brother. The fundamental need in backpacking is the right kind of boots that will suit you. Keep in mind that your boots should be big enough to fit your feet while you wear several socks and at the same time they should not give you any problems when you walk down the hill.

A gear that is invaluable on your trip is the backpack. The best backpack for a trip is one built with material of nylon and one that has a wide frame. Outside pockets help organize, but add weight and the temptation to carry unnecessary items.

A trip that takes about a week would require a backpack that is able to carry something like 5,000 cubic inches. Bring only clothes and socks that will cover the whole trip and never in excess of that. It is always a good idea to be prepared and have a rain coat in your pack.

A water resistant tent is ideal for backpacking trips. Think about buying a tent that is spacious enough to fit an extra person because that will serve as place for your equipment. To have more durability in your tent make sure that the seams are lap felled like good jeans. Treat the tent and seams with water repellent sprays and make certain it remains as waterproof as possible.

Carrying too much food is a pain, but having enough is necessary. Dehydrate your possible food option for you trip beforehand so that you will not have to carry the extra weight. A pot is always useful in trips like these and do not forget to put your food inside sealable plastic bags. It is better to bring along a Bunsen burner for when you cook so that you can avoid forest fires.
