The Economic Necessity of Working More Than One Job

By: Aubrey Moulton

Working multiple jobs can be tiring and bring on major stress. The recession means that fewer people have jobs and many incomes are insufficient. As a result, many people have had to take any job or jobs they can, which means that many individuals work at a variety of places to try and earn enough money just to get by.
Mary Beth Sammons is one example of that. She used to be the vice-president for an internet company and grossed $110,000 for a fifty hour work week but she lost her job so and she now holds down 2 part time jobs. For 60 hours of work she makes $50,000. Sammons said, “I laugh to my friends that I successfully learned how to chop my wages by more than half but I’m working more hours.”
Sammons lost her job like thousands of others but she was able to get sufficient work to pay most of her expenses. Many have not been as blessed. Approximately 7 million Americans work 2 or more jobs, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And most do this to get the bills paid or maintain their standard of living. The hours and labor are not the only difficult thing, they also have to attempt and equalize their personal and social lives as well.
Eileen Applebaum, a professor at Rutgers University stated that “Today an unprecedented number of females are either the major or only wage earner in their families. The unequal pay gap between men and women and the greater incidence of part-time work for women means that they are tend to require more than 1 job simply to make ends meet for their families.”
Therefore, today more than ever women are attempting to provide, and that means more women fighting for the employment in the sectors females typically move toward like education and health. Also, more women are looking for any employment they can get, since the recession led to the loss of well compensated jobs in traditionally male sectors. This puts more stress on the woman in the home to bring home the bacon, and many need more than one job because they receive less than a male does for the very same job.
A huge problem confronting folks with two jobs is that many don't have the benefits that may be included with full-time work. Women are in work with a perceived lesser value that don’t typically offer health insurance or paid sick time so if anything happens they could easily be out of work. One good thing about multiple jobs is that if people lose one, they will still have a paycheck from the other one. That said, working multiple jobs can be particularly challenging and stressful for anyone.
