The Benefit of Social Bookmarking

By: John Gilliam

Before discussing the use of social bookmarking as a business tool, we should first have a quick look at what is social bookmarking. By understanding that, then it will become easier to understand potential business uses.

Social bookmarking is a technique by which internet users store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the internet with the help of metadata. They replace the traditional method of browser-based system of folders by encouraging users to organize their bookmarks with tags. Social bookmarking means storing your bookmarks online, tagging them, and sharing them online with other users. Users from all over the world bookmark sites or specific pages using their favorite social bookmarks. They can search through their bookmarks by keywords or by tags, and can access their bookmarks from any internet connection. Almost all social bookmark sites have the same basic features like browser bookmarklets for one-click link saving, RSS feeds, tags and sharing capabilities.

How the social bookmarking works? A visitor will sign up for a new account, then start to bookmark his or her favorite sites by using "tags" (think of them like keywords). For example, if someone finds your site on muscle cars and finds it useful, they will then bookmark it on Del.icio.us using the tags "classic cars, street rods, hot rods" etc. The more people who bookmark your site on each social bookmarking site, the higher your site will climb in the rankings for that particular service. If you visit Del.icio.us and do a search on "gardening", you will see that the top ranked sites have been bookmarked the most.

Social bookmarking sites began as a way for web surfers to upload and save their personal browser bookmarks online. That way, web visitors are not limited to their own computers. By saving their personal social bookmarks online, they can access them from any computer.

The social aspect of social bookmarking is that everyone else saving their personal social bookmarks to these online sites can see and use everyone else's bookmarks! The social bookmarking site essentially becomes a giant collection of bookmarks contributed by many users.

If you have a website that sells a product or service, why not submit that site to the major social bookmarking sites? When you submit your internet marketing site to social bookmarking sites, along with appropriate bookmarking tags, you are tapping into a huge, extremely targeted group of people looking for information - your information!

The idea behind social bookmarking is that you share your favourite bookmarks with others, the idea being that if you found these links useful then others might too. Some social bookmarking sites also allow visitors to rate the usefulness of your bookmarks, this allows the truly useful bookmarks to become the most popular.
