Strange Life Cycleof Fleas

By: Dovid Davis

Basic Facts About Flea Pests

Fleas are one of the most important groups of bug pests since they not only cause discomfort when they bite
but they can transmit several conditions. Cat fleas are found all over the United States and the rest of the world. Adult fleas usually grow to 1/8".
Cat fleas do not have wings, and their form is very anrrow in a cross-wise direction, (side to side). Their color is brown to black.
Female fleas produce 4-8 eggs after each blood meal, Throughout their entire lifetime, they will lay somewhere between 400-500 eggs. Eggs are oval, white, and about 1/64" long. The babies usually hatch in 1-12 days. Flea larvae feed on natural waste but almost all must consume dried fecal blood before they can put the last touches on their growth. The larvae do not bite, instead they eat blood which they find in adult feces. Furthermore, flea larvae must have elevated humidity in the atmosphere (45-95º:.)

Adults fleas usually start to seek out their initial blood meal on the second day after coming out, however they are able to live for several months on stored body fat.
Once fleas are on a host, they are apt to spend all of their time on that host, feeding, mating, and laying eggs, unless, of course, they are dislodged. Although they have a chosen host, they will just as well bite people and can carry on using other
species as hosts. Based on their environmental environment fleas can continue to exist up to a a whole year.. It is critical to keep in mind, that it is
not necessary to have pets in the building in order to have fleas infesting the home. This is for the reason that fleas will often fall off their primary host following a substantial blood meal. If a flea falls off a preferred host as the host is outdoors, then the flea will lay where it dropped until it digests the meal. If a human happen to hike near the flea, after the flea has ingested the meal, the flea will leap up onto the individual, making the person its new host. Fleas can also lay dormant for extended periods of time. Thus if fleas have infested a habitat and the residence becomes dormant; for instance, lets say the people go on a protracted vacation or the owner sells the dwelling, then the fleas will lie dormant in the place where they fell off their previous host. Once the old or current family returns to the home, the fleas will up from their hibernation and spring onto their new hosts. They will actually pick up their life cycle from where it left off. For this reason, a family buying a new home cannot assume that because the house has been unoccupied for a long time that there are no fleas.
