Search Engine Marketing: Sometimes It Works, Sometimes It Doesn't

By: Adam Anthony

Everybody wants to know how to make their website attract a higher volume of traffic, especially now that the web is becoming more crowded with people and companies building new sites on the Internet every day. So they turn to search engines, recommended as a way to attract visitors who are actively looking for the product or service. Search engine marketing is actually quite simple and functions with the use of keywords. If the site is tied to a phrase, for example "anyold web site", and that phrase is ranked number one with a leading search engine, than this website will come up at the top of any search that is done for that phrase and "anyold web site" will see an increase in traffic.

The key to effective marketing is to choose the most effective key words and phrases that will come up frequently on searches and will attract the kinds of customers to your site that are likely to purchase your product. You should definitely keep in mind, though, that there is no such thing as guaranteed success when you are trying to improve your search engine rankings, so any group or company that insists they will get you a specific ranking is probably trying to take advantage of you in the long run.

Search engine marketing is thought to be a "play on words," because your success depends upon the keywords and phrases that you ultimately choose to get your site ranked. That's not to say any efforts to optimize your site will be useless, and there are other strategies to help increase your traffic and help your site have better visibility in searches. Not only that, but you can also buy text-based advertising that shows up when people enter certain matching keywords or key phrases. What no one can guarantee is where your website will specifically appear in the rankings.

Certain steps can be taken to ensure a website has a better ranking. Generally, there are minor adjustments that can be made to the title, tags, and content on you page that will get it noticed. Most search engines use these three items as the most important parts of their ranking algorithms. Many search engines will also allow you to pay for inclusion, but they will not guarantee a specific ranking. Again, there are no guarantees as to where or when those listings will be posted, but you will get into the engines much faster than through a basic submission process.

While it is not possible to pay for a specified position in the search results with a traditional search engine that functions on algorithms, it is possible to pay a fee for a banner or other eye-catching text ad to be placed on the results page somewhere on the results page where it has a better chance of being spotted. These listings are usually blatantly labeled as paid or sponsored listings, but you will be able to choose where your ad shows up.

Search engines are available that allow sites to pay for rankings. Unlike typical search engines that use a software algorithm to determine site rankings, these search sites order their results by how much webmasters will pay for a listing, and are known as "Pay Per Click" search engines. It's often said, "be wise and be wary," cause if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is just that and you don't want to be the one falling for a promise of being #1 in search engines due to a keyword or phrase.
