Research Paper Topics

By: Russell Nelson

This is where the most attention should be paid. Be very careful especially if you are given the freedom to select your own research paper topic because here is where you might goof up. A topic might look wide and tantalizing, but it can narrow up, before you have gone far and cause you to experience writers block where you find that you cannot write anything no matter how much you try. Therefore, it would be wise to gauge all the topics at hand, and do a quick analysis of them to see what suits you most. Most likely, it would be good to pick a topic that you are absolutely familiar with, other than picking a topic just because kit sounds easy.

Picking research paper topics is very crucial. You do not do a research paper just so that you can pass your exam; but you do your paper so that it can be referred to by others in the near future and so that maybe it can address a social, economical, scientific or political issue that affects the lives of many. It?s important, therefore, to do all that is in your power to choose a topic that the society can identify with. Research paper topics should address a certain audience. The topic that you choose for the older generation cannot identify with the younger generation of today. Also, if you choose a religious topic, then, you can be sure that it will only address the religious followers of the particular religion that you choose to address.

Therefore, the targeted audience is very important in the way that you choose to pick your topic. If you know what you are about, picking research paper topics can be easy or hard any way that you choose to take it. The first step is to approach your teacher or lecturer and ask them to help you pick a topic if they have not picked one already. If you can, discuss it with your fellow students so that you can pick what is not taken by the others. Make sure that the area for research for your topic is wide.

After you have picked a topic that will identify well with your targeted audience, then the next step is to get sample research papers that have been done before on the topic and studying them carefully. This will give you an inkling of what you are supposed to write on the topic. Remember also that you can quote directly from the sample research papers provided you do not exceed the limit that is usually given for academic purpose which may be as little as a quarter of a page. If you exceed that, it might be considered as plagiarism. Consider the budget that you have been allocated. If little, then get a topic that will not involve traveling or sleeping out. Take also a topic that you are most interested in. You will find that interest generates ease, and therefore you will do it well. Also pick a topic bearing in mind the time span that you have been allocated.
