Finding an accredited online degree to start teaching in a gifted classroom is getting easier. Both the University of Northern Colorado and the University of North Texas are traditional universities that offer online degree components, and the certificates and degrees can be accomplished completely online. University of Northern Colorado's Online Graduate Programs for Gifted and Talented Certification The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley is known for teacher preparation. In its early days, the UNC was known as both Colorado State Teachers College and Colorado State College of Education. UNC has also established its reputation for working with gifted eduction through its Center for the Education and Study of the Gifted, Talented, Creative Learners, which hosts summer camps for gifted students. As an extension of its already existing graduate programs, UNC offers two certificate options for teachers who want to work with gifted and talent students: The Gifted and Talented Specialist Endorsement The Masters of Arts in Special Education with a Gifted and Talented Specialization UNC's specialist endorsement takes 24 semester hours. M.A. candidates take the same classes as the specialist endorsements, and then they take 12 additional semester hours. By following UNC's program plan, it is possible to get a Master's degree in about two years. The University of North Texas' Online Certificate for Gifted and Talented Endorsements Like UNC, UNT has early roots in teacher preparation. It started as the Texas Teacher Training Institute, and later became the Texas State Teacher's College. UNT is physically located in Denton, but through the University of North Texas ecCampus, there are two online options for graduate work to obtain a gifted and talented certificate. The Graduate Academic Certificate in Gifted and Talented Education (GACT-GATE) The Master of Science in Educational Psychology with a Concentration in Gifted and Talented There are 12 online hours for UNT's Graduate Academic Certificate in Gifted and Talented Education program, which is part of the larger graduate degree options. The GACT-GATE certificate is done online. Although the classes are distinguished between instate and out-of-state during enrollment, but the courses have the same name. It is possible to finish the program in a year, and students have up to six years to apply the classes to other graduate degrees. There are a few online options for degrees from UNT, and one is the Master of Science in Educational Psychology with a Gifted and Talented emphasis. The program is 30 online hours, and there is a thesis component which brings the total up to 36 hours. The program can be completed in about two years, depending on the length of time the thesis uses. It should be noted that although both UNC and UNT accept out-of-state students for the online programs, the courses are designed to meet the standards of their home states. UNC focuses on preparing teachers for Colorado's state teaching standards, and UNT prepares teachers for Texas' state teaching standards. Certifications and degrees are recognized by individual state education departments differently, so out-of-state applicants and pre-service teachers may want to check with their home state certification offices before investing in an online degree.
