A $2 billion settlement was reached by a lawyer representing 5 million consumers and a Japanese appliance maker after the former filed a $9 billion lawsuit. Instead of allowing the lawsuit to continue in the Texas court, this company which is a leading manufacturer of laptop computers, decided on settling it outside of court. $147 million in contingency fees was what he and other lawyers got out of it. The computer manufacturer made sure to give discount coupons and even cash rebates the millions of owners who had purchased notebook computers in the past year. Laptop owners became the plaintiffs of this lawsuit filed last March. These men argued that the design flaw in the laptop computers could cause corruption or loss of data. However, these men did not say that they had suffered any damages because of this flaw. No one had ever called or written to complain about this so called flaw in the technology, claimed the Japanese corporation. Not one customer ever complained about the products of the Japanese company until the lawsuit was filed by the two lawyers. There had been no loss of data found by the company when they ran extensive laboratory tests. The Japanese company would have lost more than $9 billion if they did not win the jury trial. Many legal observers claim that the case was easily defensible and that the company's surrender was dropping meat with blood into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The sharks already showed up even though the sound of the splash did not fade yet. Scores of personal injury lawyers, including a number from Texas, immediately filed copycat class action lawsuits against five other laptop computer manufacturers that use or may have used the NEC floppy control chip. These businesses are receiving lawsuits left and right, causing them to consider layoffs. Situations may become even worse. Specializing in the computer industry, a financial analyst from New York says that prices of personal computers could go up because of these settlements. For almost twenty years, the United States has been experiencing prosperity partly because of falling computer prices which have kept inflation low, say economists. If you spare just a few hundred dollars, you can purchase low priced computers that work better than those that existed twenty years ago that cost thousands of dollars. Oppressed laptop manufacturers would surely increase the prices of their personal computers if they are continually bullied by greedy plaintiffs. Those cannot afford it will not consider this as good news.
