Mobile Phone Coverage

By: Charles Willoughby

Mobile phone coverage determines a large part of how we use our phones, but it's also something that can become easily overlooked when we're picking handsets. After all, coverage in the UK is generally considered to be excellent, and with the more distinguishing features like the handset, operating system and applications to consider, we don't always think about whether or not we'll be able to always receive a good level of signal.

However, it's vital that when signing a contract, you make sure to take mobile phone coverage into account. Some phone companies enjoy a better signal than others and the last thing you want is to sign a two year contract with a phone company that can't provide a signal in your area. If this happens you can normally get the contract cancelled, but why go through all the fuss to begin with when it's so easy to make sure you will have good mobile phone coverage on your choosen provider?

Typical 2G signal doesn't vary between handsets, but it does vary between providers. That means that you shouldn't have to worry about checking out your signal if you're upgrading your phone on the same provider, but if you're swapping providers, even if you're using the same phone, you will need to do a few checks to make sure you'll get a good signal.

2G signal controls the 'basics' of every phone, which included making voice calls and sending and receiving text messages. This sort of signal is the easiest one to get and you should be able to find a 2G signal in most places except remote rural locations and 'blackspots'. Unfortunately these blackspots can appear just about anywhere and can be caused by anything such as natural barriers like valleys and artificial barriers like tall buildings and if you live in one, there's not much you can do rather than getting to higher ground!

Having a low signal can result in not being able to make calls, and any calls you do receive could break up or be hard to understand for both parties, so obviously it's not desirable. The easiest way to find out if your phone will be able to maintain a good 2G signal is to borrow a phone from a friend who uses that provider you are planning to move too. Keep the phone around you and use it in different areas where you're likely to be often - it's annoying having perfect reception in the kitchen and no reception at all in your bedroom, but it does happen.

If that's not possible, you can still check out 2G signal by checking out signal maps and signal strength indicators on the providers websites. These usually indicate signal strength from a central postcode and so aren't 100 per cent accurate, especially if you have an older house with thicker walls, but they are a good rough indicator of how a given provider is doing in your area.
