Is Assassins Creed's Brotherhood All That?

By: Jorge Murua

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is the latest installment in Ubisoft in its series of critically acclaimed action sci-fi. Not much has changed in terms of basic gameplay that fans of the series have come to know, however, there have been some adjustments, and quite a few new additions that make the Brotherhood of the finest and most successful iteration to date.
Earlier in Assassin's Creed...
AC: Brotherhood collected directly after the events of the previous game. Ezio has secured the elusive and powerful unnatural piece of Eden, and things finally seem to be going the way of the murderer, when, of course, things go horribly wrong, putting up a (sometimes unnecessarily) complex and epic journey. Ezio must locate the entry point lost, restore Rome and overthrow the evil Borgia family. You know, nothing big.
On this side today, Desmond and his band of sharp-tongued former Abstergo Industries agents have been installed in the inner sanctum of the village of Monteriggioni in the current Ezio. Unlike previous games in AC, you can now go freely out of the Animus - the machine that allows people to relive the lives of their ancestors by accessing their memories - at any time, and run around Monteriggioni for periods of 10 minutes at a time. A little more and run the risk of being seen and jeopardizing the entire operation. There is nothing to do besides freerun and collect five objects hidden around the city, but adds greatly to the superhero origin story feel established in AC2, as more freely reach as we see Desmond put through its paces .
However, I was really hoping / expecting that at some point, you would be able to really put Desmond's capabilities to the test (eg, the modern game players of the Templars on a mission or two, etc), but Desmond only has a chance to shine, and that in the last mission of the game, and despite killing someone runs out (wake-up call!), is out of control. Hopefully the next game will have more of a badassery Desmond, because it is clearly capable at this point, and modern history has become much more compelling aspect of the narrative of AC, and deserves to be a bigger focus in the future.
The other problem I had with the story is that it sometimes feels artificially inflated, especially when it comes to the end of the story, and you realize that not much has actually happened, or rather, what has happened does not justifies the 12hours worth of play. For example, there is an elaborate mission where you must keep track Ezio's goal through the city, get the guards to protect their computers so that the murderer may use the equipment to sneak into a play at the Coliseum to deal with an actor who is having an affair with the wife of the Pope in order to obtain a key that opens a door at the Castel Saint Angelo. Thus, Leonardo Da Vinci can construct a flying machine, but cannot mount a skeleton or false key supposed to be simple? Ultimately, it feels like Brotherhood was originally going to be the second half of AC2, but Ubisoft decided to split two games, and fill with a different side task force to compensate for how thin the story had become as a result of division.
