How To Use The Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool For Keyword Research

By: Tim Bournston

If you want to know how to use the Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool for keyword research, then you have definitely come to the right place. In this article I am going to briefly explain what the tool is, then explain how to use it and how you can use the information it generates to help you with your internet marketing.

What is the Google Keyword Tool?

The Adwords Keyword Tool is a keyword discovery service provided by Google for users of their Adwords PPC service. It is designed to help them find the best keywords for their PPC campaigns.

The thing is though, it's not only useable by Adwords users. Anyone can use it. Even if you just want to know the best keywords to optimize your website for, or want to know the best keyword phrases to target when writing articles, then you will find it very useful.

How to Use the Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool

There are two ways to get keywords from the tool. One is to enter some seed keywords, and the tool will go off and find related keywords. The other method is to enter the website address of an existing website (either yours or somebody else’s), and it will analyse that websites and generate a bunch of keywords it thinks is relevant to the site.

Analysing Your Competition

The tool will also show numbers next to each keyword phrase. These numbers show how much each particular search phrase gets searched for. This enables you to see which phrases are more likely to get you a lot of search traffic. However, here’s a tip: Stay away from keywords with the highest number of searches, as you can pretty much be sure that there will already be loads of web pages for those keywords.

In addition to this, you're probably best only looking at phrases that are 3 words or more. So don’t bother with anything such as “weight” or “lose weight”, and just go for phrases like “lose weight fast” or “how to burn fat fast”.

So, keeping that all in mind, scan down the list and pick out a bunch of phrases that you like and save these in a text file. Next, go to Google, and for each phrase, type it in like:

allintitle:your keyword phrase

By searching in this way, you will show just the web pages that contain ALL of those words in the page title. This is very useful information because anyone else who is trying to optimize a page for those words will definately use them in the page title. Any phrase that is 1,000 or less is definitely worth using.
