Help For First Time Exporters

By: Christopher Ward

With the advent of web sites such as E Bay and other electronic outlets for communication more and more individuals along with small companies are faced with prospect of supplying a customer overseas and thus entering to what can appear to be the minefield of becoming an exporter.

So how do you get your small box to the other side of the world or maybe just over to another part of the EU.

Before you start to consider the actual transport of your goods it is worth considering how you intend to pack the item. If it such that it will require a wooden packing such as a crate or case then be aware of the restrictions many worldwide countries have with regards to what type of timber can be used. If you are using Plywood, MDF or similar compound materials then they should be acceptable but if you make up a crate or a frame work for a box using conventional timber you may run into problems.

If an unacceptable timber is used the product will need to be fumigated on arrival before it is allowed into the importing country. This is costly, time consuming and can lead to damage of the goods packed in the crate/case.

Similarly if you are planning to send an engine of any size it must be free of all oil (including any hydraulic fluids) and petrol/diesel. You may be asked to provide a certificate confirming that it has been drained.

The watch word in both these scenarios is to discuss this with the transport company you are planning to use and get their advice before proceeding.

So how do you find the right company to move your goods. Yellow Pages is often a good first port of call or your local Chamber of Commerce who will be pleased to provide you with a list of Companies to meet your requirement.

Another source would be The British International Freight Association which is the trade body for all types and sizes of Logistics and freight operators, either nationally or for you local area.

There are many national and international courier companies who offer door – door services not only for small packages but also for much larger shipments..

Another option would be to use a locally based Freight Forwarder/Logistics supplier who sometimes can be found to be able to offer broader options than perhaps the couriers.

All these providers can also assist with any UK Customs requirements and also help advise on what will be required when your goods arrive at the country of destination. They would also be able to advise on any packing requirements and also identify what may be considered as Dangerous Goods by an Air Line or a Shipping Company – all things that can have both costly and delaying effect on the delivery of your goods.

When you are sending goods overseas whether by air, sea or road you should consider insuring them.

Most carriers have limited liability which could mean that your valuable small item is only insured for a fraction of it’s replacement value. The cost of Marine Insurance is low and like all insurance cover it does and can give piece of mind should the item become lost or damaged.

Couriers, Freight Forwards and Logistics Operators can all give advice or offer cover but it is important not to at least consider the option.

In essence exporting can be simple but please seek the free advice that is widely available form the many types of Freight Forwarders, Couriers and Logistics Operators that available.
