Tinkering with the controls of his hearing aid, a famous ear doctor felt nervous. People living in big cities risk acquiring loss of hearing if things don't change today. This doctor and noise fighter is not alone in this line of thinking. Jackhammers, airplanes, air conditioners, and motor vehicles are being pointed at by environmentalists as potential noise sources. They seem to be doing well so far. A law has been signed called the anti noise bill though environmentalists say it could and should have been tougher. New York City is now making an effort to control noise pollution through an anti noise ordinance. But still, as the popular song of a few years ago says, the beat goes on. There is scientific proof that a person's psychological and physical welfare is negatively affected by exposure to noise. The Environmental Pollution agency issued a report stating that around 20percent of all Americans may lose their hearing because of exposure to noise. The noise causes some form of impairment to about 80 million American citizens, according to the report. 17 million people who work in noisy industries are still not included in this count, making hearing loss appear to be already an occupational hazard. A man who has to always bring up the volume of his TV to full blast or a child who stays near the Los Angeles International Airport are examples of those who suffer the sever effects of noise. In order to be heard above the roar of jets, teachers near the airport turn to the use of bullhorns. Children's involvement in fights is traced to their irritation toward the noise, report the school officials. Children may lose their hearing since the noise levels can reach dangerously high, researchers state. Noise in the classroom is beyond the limits of noise allowed in other indoor places. A loud noise causes faster heartbeat and contracted muscles in a fetus. Noise leads to hyperactivity, unhappiness, and irritability. Noise may destroy one's work quality. The work performance of a person would have many mistakes even if he produces the same output. People exposed to noise may also get sore throats or may be deprived of sleep. People may fall asleep, but they wouldn't feel very rested and would even be irritable during the day. According to research on African tribes, hearing loss is a direct result of overexposure to noise and not aging. Members of the tribe have very good hearing that great distances don't affect the audibility of what they say to each other. They are also not affected by the same diseases experienced by American males exposed to the sounds of gunshots and cannons. As the men, exposed to these loud noises, approach an older age, hearing loss becomes more apparent.
