When she signed up for an eight month course to prepare for a career as a pharmacy technician, this lady says her plan was to make a change in her life. She articulated her desire for a new career. She didn't know that the entire health care industry is a big growth area. In fact, this thirtysomething, former cashier said she was not impressed by its rapid growth until she began attending classes at a local institution, in Garden City, New York. These kinds of occupations and corresponding training programs have become a magnet to people trying to stay afloat in today's economic milieu. Their allure grabs people, from those looking for upgrades to those returning to the workforce. They also attract those who are seeking retirement careers or, having just lost a job or fearing being laid off, are looking for a field that seems to offer security and plenty of opportunities. But experts strongly encourage students to research each occupation carefully, looking not just at the demand for workers but also the supply of those newly trained who will also be entering the health care field. There are two obvious reasons why the demand for health care workers will continue to rise. Frankly, the number of old people is multiplying, and the number of professionals is declining from those going into retirement. As long as the economy is uncertain, people will look for safety in stable jobs, says a labor market analyst for New York State's labor department. Although the health care industry is certainly resilient, there are no guarantees against the turning of the tide. He therefore recommends, in addition to reviewing department statistics, a more complete examination of the profession to determine longer term possibilities and if it really fits one's expectations. There is one higher education institution in Hoffman Estates, Illinois that recently made public its application to the state and accreditation board to merge with an existing college that specializes in allied health professions. They would continue old programs in business, criminal justice, design and health care administration and add to these health care courses. The company's talking piece couched it in these terms. In this country, where the health care industry continues to grow, schools such as this one have found a competitive advantage in offering health care courses. The bona fide security people feel regarding work in health care is made possible by the reality that direct patient care cannot be outsourced, says the president of the college. With roots all the way back to 1866, this school is among 19 campuses of the Garden City, New York school. With only a couple of exceptions, all 17 of the first graduates of the pharmacy technician program were hired within two months of graduation.
