Get A GED Online – High School Equivalency Diploma At Home

By: Frank Edwards

The GED, known as the General Education Diploma or General Educational Development, was designed in the 1940s to test members of the military who had never completed high school. Many jobs currently require a GED or high school diploma. Most community colleges and some four-year colleges require one or the other to become a college student. Getting a GED online can help busy adults who need to get their high school equivalency certificate but do not have the time to attend traditional classes and want to earn a diploma at home.
Get a GED Online
Since the 1940s the GED gradually has become an alternative for people who do not have a high school diploma. More than 40 million adults in the United States do not have high school equivalency credentials. This means that 21 per cent of the population lacks a high school diploma or GED, or one in five adults.
More than 700,000 people took the GED in 2007, but 70 percent did not pass on the first try. The GED involves five different tests, and students must pass all five with an average score of 450, and no score lower than 410 on any of the five tests.
Most GED exam takers pass at least one or more of the five sections on the first try, and students only need to retake the sections they failed. Once a student passes all five sections with a 410 or higher, and an average score of 450 for all five sections, he or she receives a GED.
Students can take GED prep and classes to get a GED online.
High School Equivalency
The American Council on Education created the GED in 1942. The ACE is still the only group that offers the GED exam. Students can study for the GED exam online, but cannot take the actual text online. Tests are given in person at test times across the country.
A few important facts about the GED high school equivalency:
Time: the entire test takes seven hours to complete.
Money: the test can cost as little as $7.50 and as much as $100, depending on the state.
Type: the exam is offered in English, Spanish, French, Braille, large-print and audiobook form.
Numbers: in 2008 776,728 people took all or part of the exam. 493,490 passed all five sections with an average of 450, receiving their GED.
The American Council on Education offers GED online preparation materials at their website, with sample questions, practice tests, test-taking strategies and tips, and more. This should be the first place to start studying to get a GED online.
If, after reading the information on the ACE website, students think that the GED is too hard, consider signing up for Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses. More than ten percent of adults in the United States have less than four years of schooling. These students seeking high school equivalency will not have the skills to pass the GED. Adult Basic Education courses help people with a third-grade education to learn enough to get to the point where an online GED course can help.
Can I Get My GED Online and Earn a Diploma at Home?
There are many websites offering information on getting a GED at home. Excellent preparation and study guides can be found on the Internet. Online GED practice exams can help students to study the parts they do not know and to know which areas are fine for passing the GED exam.
In addition, many high school equivalency programs to help get a GED online give pre-tests and post-tests. Students take the pre-test to learn what they know and what they don't know. The online GED course helps the student to fill the holes in their learning. The student then takes a post-test to test how much more they have learned. With this method the student gradually learns everything needed to pass the GED.
Earning a GED online or in class involves four steps:
Decide to do it.
Learn where the holes are in what the student knows.
Study to fill in the gaps.
Take the exam and pass.
When looking at getting a GED online, look at the program carefully. Some programs charge far too much money. Some don't offer enough information to truly help students pass. Most programs are easy to use. Students who want to get a GED online need a program that will let them log in 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
There are many reasons to get a GED online, but the most important reason is motivation. Look for the best program to get started immediately on this life-changing path. Many area colleges offer special Internet programs as well. Look for education fairs and information about local, online GED prep programs. Students who want to complete this part of their education, get a better job, enter the military or go on to college need a General Educational Development diploma, and online learning is a big step in achieving this goal.
