Blackberry Torch 3G Orange

By: Charles Willoughby

A few years ago it would have been very hard to imagine a BlackBerry using anything other than their trademark design and keyboard, which has long been a major draw for people who prefer a more tactile experience than the standard touch screen keyboard offered by most other smart phones. However, the Torch has braved that new world to come up with a sliding blackberry, where the Qwerty keyboard takes second place to a much bigger touchscreen.

The Blackberry Torch 3g Orange is quite large and not as light as other smart phones, especially with the keyboard opened up. It's certainly not as compact as some might have come to expect from BlackBerry, but it does maintain the companies very solid and high quality design. Thankfully the keyboard hasn't suffered from becoming part of the slide mechanic, which doesn't have that flimsy 'just about to break' feel of other phones that adopt a sliding design. The screen that replaces the keyboard as the dominate feature on the front of the phone has been switched from a clickable touch screen to a more natural and commonly used capacitive model which feels much more responsive than what was used on the BlackBerry Storm.

The screen can be used to write messages if you wish, using the on screen keyboard and touch controls, but the real keyboard still wins out, especially if you've been using Blackberry phones for a long time and have become used to the design and feel of the keyboard. It may be a long time before we see an on screen keyboard from Blackberry that can truly compare to the real thing.

The screen itself is bright, vibrant and easy on the eye, running at 360x480 resolution, which is the highest of any BlackBerry so far produced. It puts it behind both the Samsung Galaxy and the iPhone 4 in terms of resolution, but still better than average compared to other smartphones.

The phone is powered by BlackBerry 6 OS, which is a brand new operating system which premiers on this phone. The home screen can be swiped across, each screen revealing four icons. It's a clear sign that BlackBerry are trying to follow their own design rather than trying to copy Apple or Android. Screens are much less busy, fonts are bigger and clearer and there's just a lot less going on at once. It does mean it takes that split second longer to find what you need, though.

People who have used a BlackBerry often in the past will be jumping for joy to learn that the new operating system has vastly improved the original web browser, making it far easier to use the net on the phone and bringing BlackBerry up to speed in terms of powerful and easy web browsing. The browser includes auto-fit, full html rendering and multi touch zoom and is a joy to use. It's a little late to the game and should have been fixed two years ago, but it's here now and it works very well.

Overall the Torch is a big step forward for Blackberry and one that many fans of the companies phones have been waiting for. Whether it's enough to turn Android or Apple fans towards the company is uncertain, but it's a very capable handset that shows BlackBerry are still major players in the mobile game.
