Aspirin for Dogs - Is it Safe?

Often times when dogs age, they develop arthritis. This disease is very common and is seen in almost all dogs. Larger dogs exhibit more severe symptoms than smaller dogs because of their added weight.
Arthritis is a stiffening of the joints and causes much discomfort in older dogs. Often times, vets suggest giving dogs Asprin to alleviate some of the pain. This does work. However, dog owners should understand there are dangers associated with giving Asprin to dogs. We had an old dog one time taking Asprin and all was well. However, after about two weeks, the dog became very ill. The dog almost died.
We found out later, from the vet, that the Asprin had caused an intestinal infection. There were warning signs we didn't recognize. Some of the signs of this infection were very dark, almost tar like poop. If you are giving your dog Asprin and their poop changes in color in any way, stop giving the dog Asprin and contact your vet immediately. It's very important to recognize those signs.
Although our old dog did not die from the Asprin, we were forced to find other means of alleviating his arthritis pain. After the Asprin episode, we began giving him liquid glucosamine for his arthritis. This helped his arthritis pain significantly. This allowed him to enjoy several more years of happy times with us. Again, be sure to ask your vet about the side effects of Asprin if it is suggested you give it to him or her.
