Business Week October 3, 2005 recently ran a commentary entitled The Overworked Networked Family. In the article was a listing of 7 tips to avoid burnout. I've changed their list a small amount and added some of my very own to form 10 tips. The main target of the article was how professionals and data workers can use technology to balance work and family life.
1. Prioritize. What are the two or 3 things you need to do throughout your day? Flag those tasks and do them first. Prioritize the rest of your "to try to to" list. As David Allen of David Allen and Company and author of Getting Things Done says, "There's perpetually a lot of to try and do than there is time to try and do it."
2. Delegate less necessary tasks. If that's not possible put the smallest amount necessary tasks on the back burner.
3. Do not over schedule yourself. Leave a while in your day for emergencies that come back up.

Use technology to help you to stay connected however bear in mind there's continually an off button!
6. Take time off. If you must be "on decision" screen your calls and emails on on a daily basis off. Respond solely when urgent. Set boundaries around your own free time. Take vacation time to get totally off from your work for a significant period of your time (at least every 3 weeks vacation a year.
7. Schedule in the flesh time with friends and family. Being with colleagues and family is additionally important. Do not isolate yourself. Make positive to pay time with each family and colleagues
