"Good" Bad Study Habits

By: Albert Diaz

Everyone's seen the tips, series of tips, and even booklets of tips on how to study effectively. They range from keeping the surrounding temperature to a constant 68° F to making sure there are no people within a 20 meter radius of the study zone. Most of these tips are proven to work quite well.
Grades however, only seem to improve nowadays for those who have good grades in the first place. What about everyone else? There are just some cases where finding a quiet environment with clean cool air is just impossible, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Time students don't have, money they are not able or willing to spend, as well as information that teachers may or may not choose to cover all factor into how effective a list of good study habits can be. In light of this, here are some good study habits turned bad to help students study.
Leave Notes Everywhere
Organized unorganization is key here. Most people can't whip out their notes to study while they wait for a bus, get a break off work, or take an elevator. Those time slots are usually reserved for last minute homework rushes anyhow, so what other options are there?
One idea is to separate chapters, sections, lessons, days, or handfuls of material, and keep them in handy locations. For example, having a set of notes near every cushioned surface tends to work well with most students. But what about when cramming and a particular note page is needed above all others? This works out even better, because by rummaging through pile after pile for information location, the information itself becomes stored in the student's memory. For example while searching for information on the Holocaust, a student notices that several note pages on WWII and the persecution of Jews are in close proximity. While looking at pages with similar themes, connections will usually be made about their content.
Eat Frequently
How often do people complain about temperature, time of day, or noise level when studying? Now, how about when they are eating? Anyone under 50 should be able to agree with the fact that one is not as wary of his surroundings when eating as opposed to studying. Now, in many cases this will backfire because the student in question will spend his time eating on top of his study materials and paying no attention to them whatsoever, but as long as the meal isn't a full course this shouldn't be a problem. Concentration will remain constant, however high or low it may be.
People First, Books Second
A student slacking off in class is nothing new to our generation. Problems usually intensify however, after this frightened and desperate student tries to study a whole chapter from a textbook the night before a test. Not all of the information in any chapter is usually taught by a professor, and thus all of it usually won't be on an assessment. Before drilling the books, try getting notes from another student or asking advice on what to study from a teacher. If worried about appearance don't be; slackers usually aren't very discrete to begin with. This also allows students to borrow research material or supplies if they are not able or willing to acquire them on their own.
